The Metropolitan Council calculates pollutant loads to understand sources of pollutants to the major rivers, track pollutant hotspots, and understand pollutant additions and losses through the metro area.
Pollutant loads are calculated for sites on the Mississippi, Minnesota, and St. Croix Rivers, as well on sites on major tributary streams in the metro area. Starting in 2015, pollutant loads are calculated for the following pollutants: Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Total Phosphorus (TP), NOx (Nitrate(NO3)+Nitrate(NO2)), Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), and Chloride (Cl). Historically loads were also calculated for Nitrate (NO3), Ammonia (NH3), Total Dissolved Phosphorus (TDP), and Volatile Suspended Solids (VSS). The current suite of parameters was selected to be in line with the MPCA Watershed Pollutant Load Monitoring Network (WPLMN) program and to reduce redundancy.
