The Carnelian-Marine stream system connects a series of lakes and wetlands in Washington County. It extends from Scandia to the St. Croix River. The outlet of the system is at Little Carnelian Lake. Once leaving the lake, the water flows in a pipe until it empties into the St. Croix River near the historical Boomsite north of Stillwater. The pipe was installed in 1985 to prevent flooding that had previously been affecting properties and homes on Big Marine and Big Carnelian Lakes. The Carnelian-Marine watershed provides opportunities for swimming, fishing, wildlife viewing, and other recreational activities. The stream and its surrounding area are a valuable scenic amenity for the community.Carnelian-Marine Outlet at Little Carnelian Lake, River Mile 3 was monitored by the Metropolitan Council as part of WOMP (Watershed Outlet Monitoring Program) until 2009. Samples were collected at regular intervals for baseflow and also during storm events. This station also had automatic monitoring equipment which took measurements every 15 minutes. This continuous data can be found under the "Time Series" dropdown in the "Data Collected" section located farther down on this webpage.
