Coon Creek has a 92 square mile watershed covering central Anoka County, ranging from rural residential to highly urban. The headwaters originate in the city of Columbus in the Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area. Coon Creek drains into the Mississippi River in the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park. The creek drains stormwater for Coon Rapids, Blaine, Andover, and Ham Lake.Coon Creek at Coon Rapids, River Mile 1.9 was monitored by the Metropolitan Council from 1995 to 1999 as part of WOMP (Watershed Outlet Monitoring Program). It measured the water quality of Coon Creek before it entered into the Mississippi River. Samples were collected at regular intervals for baseflow and also during storm events.
