Rum River is located north of the metropolitan area. It begins at the Lake Mille Lacs outlet in Mille Lacs Kathio State Park and runs through lakes, wetlands, forest, grassland, agricultural, and urban areas, including Onamia Lake, a crucial wild rice lake. There are small stands of wild rice found along the length of the river. The river discharges into the Mississippi River near the city of Anoka. The river is both a State Water Trail and State Wild and Scenic River.Rum River at Anoka, River Mile 0.6 is jointly used as a stream WOMP (Watershed Outlet Monitoring Program) station and as part of the Large Rivers Conventional Monitoring Program. Previously, Rum River at Anoka, River Mile 0.6 was a large river monitoring station and Rum River below Main St., River Mile 0.5 was a stream WOMP station. In 2000, the WOMP station was moved to Rum River at Anoka Dam, River Mile 0.7. The WOMP station was moved again in 2012 and merged with the river monitoring stations at River Mile 0.6, however the WOMP automatic monitoring equipment was removed when the switch was made. Prior to that, the automatic monitoring equipment was taking measurements at the WOMP station at River Mile 0.7 every 15 minutes.
